Techniques
Students wil be taught the techniques essential for safe operation of their
motorcycles in a variety of situations. These will include motorcycle control
through handlebar input, counterweighting, lean angles, braking, swerving,
weaving, curve negotiation, braking in curves, maximum braking techniques,
controlling rear wheel lock up, slow speed operation, turning inside tight
areas, obstacle avoidance & much more.
Early exercises will be used by the instructors to evaluate the riding skill of
each student. Students who fail to demonstrate an appropriate level of
motorcycle control may be requested to defer their advanced training until they
have become more proficient.
Exercises
The exercises outlined in these courses are designed to simulate cars, trucks,
natural and man made obstacles, potholes, and roadway debris that the rider
must negotiate during the everyday operation of his/her motorcycle. The
exercises are progressive. Early exercises allow the student to develop the
skills needed to successfully complete later advanced exercises.
Instructors will demonstrate each exercise several times. Additionally,
students are walked through the exercise with instruction given on head & eye
placement, motorcycle placement, handlebar input and the throttle/clutch/brake
triangle. Students are given ample time to gain proficiency with each exercise.
Slow Straight Line
This exercise introduces the student to slow speed motorcycle control by
utilizing the throttle, clutch and brake simultaneously.
Small Offset Cone Weave
This exercise is designed to develop the ability to rapidly change direction in
a limited space.
Large Offset Cone Weave
This exercise is designed to develop a smooth blend of clutch, throttle and the
proper amount of rear brake combined with motorcycle placement and proper head
and eye movement.
Pressing to Initiate Lean
This exercise is designed to develop the ability to initiate motorcycle
movement through handlebar input only.
Double Teardrop
This exercise teaches limited space manuvers (u-turn) to develop combined
clutch, throttle and rear brake techniques with proper body position to control
the motorcycle at very low speed and in limited space.
Braking In A Curve
This exercise is designed to improve the rider's ability to stop quickly while
negotiating a curve.
Emergency Stop
This exercise is designed to improve the rider's ability to stop quickly and
safely. Emphasis is placed on properly balancing the use of the front and rear
brakes.
Lollipop
This exercise is designed to develop the ability to make very sharp tight turns
combined with proper head and eye movement and motorcycle placement.
Offset Weave w/Gates
This exercise is a more difficult version of the Large Offset Cone Weave
exercise, requiring precise motorcycle placement in order to successfully
navigate through all of the gates.
Iron Cross
This exercise is designed to develop balance, clutch, throttle and brake
control combined with concentration, head and eye movement and precise
motorcycle placement.
Double 360
This exercise combines the challenge of the Lollipop exercise with the skills
needed to transition from a full-left turn to a full-right turn.
Brake and Escape
This exercise is designed to develop evasive maneuvering skills.
Straight Cone Weave
This exercise is designed to develop the ability to properly swerve the
motorcycle to successfully avoid an obstacle.
180 Decel
This exercise is designed to develop skill in emergency braking and proper
placement of the motorcycle for close quarter turning.
Snowman
This exercise emphasises very precise motorcycle placement as the rider
transitions to smaller and smaller turns.
